"When you have one you have none."
I was talking to a retired army friend the other day and he was telling me he was still hiking with his military Alice Pack. As a former Airborne Infantryman and SASR free-falling specialist, I can understand he gained a special connection with his Alice Pack. While serving in the military and spending a lot of time in the field living out of our packs, we would spend a lot of time setting them up so that they were practical and as comfortable as we could get them whilst also staying under the desired weight.
But after all the nostalgia, packs have come a long way in the last 20 years. When you consider that the purpose and characteristics of military packs are quite different to civilian packs if you are still using your first Aust-Issue Auscam pack from the early 90’s its time to upgrade.
Considering not every pack suits every adventure, here are four packs I now use and love just as much as my Modified Alice Pack that I used in Recon Platoon 1RAR and on SASR selection.
